Mixed Media 3

This summer, I followed two online classes; workshops that you can participate in over the internet for a small fee. The first one is taught by Alisa Burke, some great drawing and painting with all kinds of materials on fabric. It's very inspiring to work in such a different way. With this online class, you get a few new lessons sent to you for a few weeks with videos and exercises. There's also a possibility to discuss your work and to show your fellow students what you've made one the website.


Deze zomer heb ik twee 'online classes' gevolgd, dat zijn een soort workshops die je tegen een niet te groot bedrag kunt volgen, helemaal via internet. De eerste wordt gegeven door Alisa Burke, heerlijk tekenen en schilderen met allerlei materialen op textiel.  Heel inspirerend om eens op een hele andere manier te werken. Met zo'n online class krijg je een aantal weken steeds nieuwe lessen toegestuurd met filmpjes en opdrachten. Ook bestaat de mogelijkheid om over je werk te praten en om je werk aan medeleerlingen te tonen via de website.

The second online class was by Carla Sonheim. These classes are also divided over a few weeks, 5 in total. They're full of videos and inspiring words. You can ask her all about your work and here also, there's a online group through which you can share your work with others.

De tweede online class was van Carla Sonheim. Ook deze lessen zijn verdeeld over meerdere weken, in totaal 5. Vol met filmpjes en inspirerende teksten. Je kan haar van alles vragen over je werk en ook hier is er een groep gemaakt waarin je je werk met andere kunt delen.

The Lady with the Green Hair

One of my favourite textile art books is The Book of Stitches by Constance Howard, 'the Lady with the Green Hair (1910-2000)

Een van mijn favorieten textielboeken is The Book of Stitches van the Lady with the Green Hair, Constance Howard (1910-2000).

She wrote several books related to textile arts about embroidery and the design process. Even through they're a few years old now, the books are written so well I still use them frequently. They're out of print right now, but they're quite easily found second hand, online or in a bookstore. 

Ze heeft diverse textiel-gerelateerde boeken geschreven over borduren en het proces van ontwerpen. Ook al zijn ze wat ouder, deze boeken zijn zo goed geschreven dat ik ze nog heel regelmatig gebruik. Ze worden niet meer uitgegeven maar zijn goed tweedehands te vinden.


Constance Howard taught at Goldsmiths' College in London from 1947 onwards. She founded the embroidery department there as the head of the textile and fashion faculty. She was no boring old lady, but well ahead of her time. In the 1930s she died her hair green using lithographic ink as dye. That really strikes me as so special for the time. 
A huge mural by Constance Howard was exhibited in England in 1951, titled 'The Country Wife'. It is being restored and preserved right now by the National Needlework Archive. 

Constance Howard gaf les vanaf 1947 op de Goldsmiths' College. Ze heeft daar de afdeling borduren opgericht als hoofd van de afdeling  textiel-en mode.
Ze was geen grijze muis, maar haar tijd ver vooruit. In de jaren '30 verfde zij haar haar groen. Ze gebruikte als kleurstof lithografische inkt. Ik vind dat zo bijzonder voor die tijd.
Een heel groot werk van Constance Howard was te zien in 1951 in Engeland met de titel The Country Wife. Het werk wordt nu gerestaureerd om het te behouden voor de toekomst door het National Needlework Archive.

Kaffe Fassett, 'A Life in Colour'

Last week I visited Kaffe Fassett's amazing and inspiring exhibition 'A Life in Colour' at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. Some of his paintings are on show as well as many highlights of his work as a knitwear and textile designer and some works made especially for this occasion. I love Kaffe Fassett's use of colour and the way he blends and mixes textures, patterns and colours. The exhibition is on until 29 June 2013, so if you can make it to London you should definitely try to visit!

Workspace

My new workspace! I've moved into this room now and although there are still things to do, I'm really happy and inspired. 

Material Monday

Over the years I have collected so many beautiful ribbons, lace, fabrics and yarns, and in the end I only use so little. I would love to use all these amazing materials in something, together, and preferably in something usable. If anyone has an idea, please let me know!

In de loop der jaren heb ik zoveel mooie bandjes, kantjes, lapjes, en draadjes verzameld en eigenlijk gebruik je er maar zo weinig van. Ik zou het zo fijn vinden om al deze mooie materialen te gebruiken in een werkstuk, bij elkaar en dan nog het liefst in iets wat bruikbaars is. Als iemand een idee heeft, laat het me weten!

Crochet potholders

I love this wall covered in potholders. This great work is from Anu Tuominen, and it's called kirpputorpannulaput. The potholders all come from thrift shops and flea markets, but I love making these myself, too.

A few days after the amazing workshop embroidering Marken wedding corsets with Sari Maas, I have been to the museum in Marken. There you can currently visit the exhibition From dark to light, about how mourning is displayed in traditional dress. I always love to go visit Marken, and take the boat there from Volendam.

Een paar dagen na de geweldige workshop Marker Bruidsrijglijfjes borduren van Sari Maas ben ik naar het museum in Marken geweest. Daar is momenteel de tentoonstelling Van donker naar licht te zien, dit gaat over de rouw die te zien is in de klederdracht. Ik vind het altijd leuk om naar Marken te gaan en dan het liefst met de boot vanuit Volendam.
