Where to buy materials in Istanbul

 

I just got back from a short city trip to Istanbul, a beautiful city! Amazing shops, food and people. As you can see in the pictures, they sell absolutely everything in specialized stores full of ribbon, yarn and everything else you could possibly need or want. My supplies are stocked again for now!

Ik ben net terug van een paar dagen in Istanbul, wat en prachtige stad! Fantastische winkels, heerlijk eten en leuke mensen. Zoals je kunt zien in de foto's, is hier alles te koop in winkeltjes vol bandjes, kantjes, garen en wat je ook maar nodig denkt te hebben. Mijn voorraden zijn weer aangevuld!

Where to buy ...colourious!

Last week, I visited Leiden and ran into this beautiful knitting shop. The owner was just moving the 'spring yarns' to the bottom and the 'winter yarns' to the top to prepare for the new season. Great shop to visit, with a really nice selection.

Vorige week kwam ik in Leiden deze prachtige breiwinkel tegen, Ribbels in de Pieterskerk-Choorsteeg. De eigenaresse was net de lentegarens naar beneden aan het verplaatsen en de wintergarens naar boven om voor te bereiden op het nieuwe seizoen. Hele leuke winkel om langs te gaan met een mooie collectie.

Crochet Trees

                              
For my little cousin, I have  made some trees. It was great fun to make these, the tree itself is made of paper-mâché on an empty toilet roll and some acrylic paint to get the real appearance of a tree trunk.

The leaves of the tree are the crocheted part. I made these with one of my first self spun irregular jarns. They are very stiff and tight because I used a very small crochet needle, so that I don't even need to fill or stuff them.

You will need hook number 1, plenty of free time and sunshine. I used a double thread and changed the colours for each flower four times

Material Monday

Over the years I have collected so many beautiful ribbons, lace, fabrics and yarns, and in the end I only use so little. I would love to use all these amazing materials in something, together, and preferably in something usable. If anyone has an idea, please let me know!

In de loop der jaren heb ik zoveel mooie bandjes, kantjes, lapjes, en draadjes verzameld en eigenlijk gebruik je er maar zo weinig van. Ik zou het zo fijn vinden om al deze mooie materialen te gebruiken in een werkstuk, bij elkaar en dan nog het liefst in iets wat bruikbaars is. Als iemand een idee heeft, laat het me weten!

Felting and spinning

Today I embroidered on a new piece of felt with my own spun yarn. The felt is made of a yellow sheet with ribbons, lace and some silk my dear friend E. gave me, and a pink sheet with silk and small bits of lace from my own collection. I combined these two sheets through the method of Martien van Zuilen. I learned this from her in 1997 at a workshop organised by  Lyda Rump and after 15 years I still use this technique all the time. 

Vandaag heb ik geborduurd met mijn zelf gesponnen garen op een nieuwe lap vilt. Het vilt is gemaakt van een gele lap met bandjes en kantjes en zijde van mijn lieve vriendin E. en een roze lap met zijde en wat kleine stukjes kant is van mijzelf. Deze twee lappen zijn samengevoegd volgens de methode van Martien van Zuilen. Ik heb dat van haar in 1997 geleerd in een workshop bij Lyda Rump en na 15 jaar gebruik ik deze techniek nog steeds heel vaak.

Crochet Scarf

I have made this scarf  ​​from all kinds of leftover thin yarn.

Vilt en Kant 3

Dit kant heb ik gemaakt op de naaimachine en door de open structuur kan je het heel goed meevilten.

I made this lace on the embroidery machine and because of its open structure it is very good to felt with.

Ik vind het leuk om zelf kant te maken en dit te verwerken in mijn vilt. Bijvoorbeeld van restjes draad die je tussen twee lagen water oplosbare stof legt. Vervolgens op de naaimachine goed doorstikken, eventueel in een soort patroon zoals hierboven zodat er een samenhang komt tussen de losse draadjes.

I like to make my own lace and use it in felt. For example from leftover bits of yarn, which you put between two layers of water soluble fabric. Then stitch through well with the sewing machine, perhaps in some kind of pattern like in the picture above, to connect the separate bits of yarn.

bolletjes wol maken

Vandaag heb ik knotjes gemaakt van een streng wol die ik  eerder deze week op de Dag van de Wol gekocht had. Dit is wel een leuk werkje op zo'n regenachtige zondag als vandaag. Ik heb de bolletjes genummerd zodat de kleuren straks mooi doorlopen als ik de wol ga gebruiken.

Today I made balls out of a skein wool which I bought earlier this week at the Day of the Wool. This is a nice thing to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon, like today. I have numbered the balls so that the colours will follow each other up nicely when I use the wool later. 

Turkije

Ben net terug van twee weken reizen in Turkije met de familie. Het was erg leuk en zeker ook inspirerend. We hebben veel gezien en ook veel mooi handwerk. Ik ben erg onder de indruk van Oya's, kleine kleurige

bloemetjes, traditionele versiering van sjaals en andere doeken. Ze worden op verschillende manieren gemaakt, bijvoorbeeld met frivolité, naaldkant of gehaakt. 

Ik had zelf al een paar jaar een ketting van Oya's, in Nederland gekocht. In Turkije heb ik er nog twee bijgekocht. Ik had er een om toen ik een winkel in Fethiye binnenkwam en het viel de eigenaar op. Zijn vrouw spaart Oya's en hij haalde een hele doos van zolder om te laten zien. Ze kon ze ook zelf maken en vertelde dat het met een kleine haaknaald wordt gemaakt en gaf me een klosje van het garen dat gebruikt wordt. 

Gewapend met dit klosje ben ik naar een lokale handwerkwinkel gegaan. Daar heb ik onder andere dit prachtig garen gekocht in allerlei kleuren en een hele kleine haaknaald. 

Na wat gezoek op internet blijkt het toch wel lastig om precies te vinden hoe Oya gemaakt wordt. Ik heb wat ideeën en ga het proberen... 

We just got back from two weeks of traveling in Turkey with the family. It was great fun and very insipring. We have seen a lot and also much beatiful craftwork. I'm very impressed with Oyas, small colourful flowers, traditional decoration for scarfs. They are made in several ways, for example with crochet or needlework.

I have had a string of Oya for a few years already, which I had bought in the Netherlands. In Turkey I bought two more. I was wearing one when I entered a shop in Fethiye and the owner immediately noticed. His wife collected Oyas and he got a box from upstairs to show me some. She could make them herself and told me they are made with a small chrochet hook and gave me a spool of the yarn that is used. 

Armed with the spool I went to a local crafts shop. There I bought, among other things, this beautiful yarn in many different colours together with a small crochet hook. 

After some searching around on the internet it turns out to be quite hard to find out exactely how Oya is made. I did get some ideas and I am going to try my best...
